The Casino Nobile and the Casina delle Civette are part of the larger Villa Torlonia museum complex. The Casino Nobile, the main building of the Villa and the work of Giuseppe Valadier in the early 1800s and then of Giovan Battista Caretti between 1832 and 1840, was the main residence of the Torlonia family. The current layout, after decades of abandonment, has returned the building to its mid-19th century style, with a large number of decorative elements by the most famous artists of the period. The Casina delle Civette, designed in 1840 by well-known architect G. Jappelli and transformed later by architect V. Fasolo in 1917-20, is home to an interesting, unique museum dedicated to artistic stained glass. The original windows, which date back to the period 1910 and 1925, offer a vast range of examples that show the establishment and development of stained glass in Rome in that period. The original collection of the Casina has been added to with other pieces by the same artists and above all, with drawings, sketches and preparatory cartoons that often refer to the windows commissioned by the prince.
The Villa Torlonia Museum is part of the Musei in Comune network as well as of the accessibility programme, “Musei da toccare”. An Italian sign language video with subtitles, about three minutes long, is projected on to a multimedia support in the Casino Nobile and Casina delle Civette , greeting deaf visitors and introducing them to the exhibition route. An Italian sign language video is also available online. Through Zètema, Roma Capitale services company, it is also possible to reserve (email to didattica@zetema.it or tel. 060608) guided Museum visits, with Italian Sign Language translator or guide.
