With all its majestic splendour and architectural perfection, Pisa’s Piazza del Duomo is the highest example of Pisan Romanesque style, a unique blend of classic, paleochristian, Lombard and oriental motifs. The Piazza, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, contains the monuments that D’Annunzio – in his Forse che sì forse che no – called Miracles: the cathedral, the tower, the baptistry and the cemetery. D’Annunzio’s definition is what gives the area its popular name of Piazza dei Miracoli, of which the tower is certainly the crowing jewel. The tower, known simply as the Leaning Tower of Pisa was the bell tower of the religious buildings in Piazza del Duomo. Today it is known throughout the world for the beauty of its architecture and above all, for the way it leans, which makes it a genuine miracle of statics. The Opera della Primaziale Pisana (O₽A) is the no-profit organisation created in 1063 to oversee the building works of the monuments in Piazza del Duomo. Today it continues to safeguard, promote and enhance the value of this heritage.
The Opera della Primaziale Pisana works on a daily basis to meet the needs of every one of its visitors. Specifically, for deaf people, it has developed MiracoLIS, a range of audio video guides dedicated to the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, and accessible to all. The videos are in Italian sign language, with subtitles and a narrator for the story and the curious facts of the monuments in the square. There are currently two issues, one dedicated to the Leaning Tower, and the other dedicated to the Cemetery. The videos are available from the website of the Opera della Primaziale Pisana under the heading “information/accessibility” as well as on the OPA YouTube channel.
