The Camerano Caves, also known as the “Underground City of Camerano”, run under the whole of the town. For many years it was thought that the many tunnels were the remains of old sandstone caves or places used to store wine. Exploration has shown that in almost all areas, architectural embellishments were added, bas reliefs and decorative features that are not really suited to cellars or simple storage areas. In fact, the caves were also used as places of worship, meeting and protection. The origins of the Underground City are still not certain, since there is no historic documentation. Comparative analysis of other underground structures and construction techniques, it is possible to surmise that the Camerano Caves have remote origins, perhaps proto- or prehistoric. Nothing has remained of that period and the caves that can be visited today are the result of changes and enlargements made over the centuries, from the Middle Ages through to the early 20th century, or during the latest use, which was the Second World War.
