The Gallery of Modern Art, Palermo can boast over a century of history. Over this long journey, it has been able to increase its collections but above all, it has become one of the most modern, vital cultural institutions in the city. It is named after Empedocle Restivo, who promoted its opening at the start of the last century, and was opened in the Ridotto del Teatro Politeama on 24 May 1910. Since 2006, the story of Palermo’s Gallery of Modern Art has continued inside the monumental building of Sant’Anna, a new headquarters, and more suited to the needs of a museum in the 21st century. The new spaces contain over two hundred works, including paintings and sculptures, illustrating the journey of Italian figurative arts in the 18th and 19th centuries. The vast collection reflects the role that nationally important painters and sculptors played in the vicissitudes of modernist Palermo.
