The Trajan Markets were built in the early part of the second century BCE and were destined to trade and administrative functions, serving Trajan’s Forum. The monumental complex stands on the slopes of the Quirinal Hill. Reoccupied and transformed over time, it underwent cutting-edge structural restoration and preservation works in the period 2005-07. The Imperial Forums Museum was inaugurated inside the markets in 2007. It is possible to admire the recomposed architectural and sculpted decorations of the forums, created using original fragments, moulds and modular integrations in stone. To display its relics, the museum uses traditional panels as well as multimedia technologies, which contribute to creating an original, interactive feel to the visit. The structure, as well as being home to the Imperial Forums Museum, also hosts very popular temporary exhibitions.
The Trajan Markets are part of the Musei in Comune network as well as of the accessibility programme, “Musei da toccare”. An Italian sign language video with subtitles is projected on to a multimedia support in the Museum, greeting deaf visitors and introducing them to the exhibition route. The YouTube channel for Musei in Comune also provides a video guide in Italian Sign Language to accompany deaf visitors throughout the museum. Through Zètema, Roma Capitale services company, it is also possible to reserve (email to didattica@zetema.it or tel. 060608) guided Museum visits, with Italian Sign Language translator or guide.
